London, United Kingdom
Want to learn about the mysterious suburb of Hackney? Always wondered which is is the oldest market stall on Broadway Market?
Walk with local history expert, Sean Gubbins, to follow an ancient trackway out of Hackney to hear about the ‘common land’ of London Fields.
Find out about one of London’s few remaining Lidos, the first Jews in Hackney, 18th century asylums for the mentally ill, the Regent’s Canal and Broadway Market. Explore the area which turned from market gardens to the bricks and mortar of a London suburb – now one of the city’s coolest places to live.
This two hour walk, starting on the steps of Hackney Town Hall, ends at St. Michael’s and All Angels, Lansdowne Drive, where you will discover the fine 20th century murals and stained glass windows of John Hayward.
Sean has a passion for history, which recently made him change career from IT to history teaching. For the past 10 years Sean has been building up his local history expertise, leading walks all over Hackney.
